Once smoke starts to appear and the “coolant empty” lamp lights up, it’s time for the driver to take action. Pull over and turn off the engine is the usual advice. Topping up with cold water used to be problematic: the water pump’s sealing rings were made of graphite and aluminium oxide, and the cold water could lead to so-called thermal shock, shattering the seals.
